The Willow Tree Project

Yes, I know that AltBanjo has been dead for quite some time now. In the past I’ve tried to employ some Futile Devices to get myself to contribute more, but alas, it was Too Much. However, Now That I’m Older, a graduate, and a member of the working force I have felt the need to continue my education. I Want to Be Well.

To continue the pursuit of knowledge, I started another blog entitled, 1 Week 1 Project, where I undertake one project a week. This week’s project is to tab out the Willow Tree by Chad VanGaalen. Yes, yes, I know what you are thinking, “I’ve see this before, he won’t finish it.” I Walked this same path but now, it’s different. I’m going to Get Real, Get Right this time. It may seem like it’s All for Myself but I want you to hold me accountable. Vesuvius.

At the end of the week, I’ll post the tab to Willow Tree on here. I want to prevent any Bad Communication, so if you’d like to follow along on my progress, check outĀ 1week1project.com. Also, if you would like to contribute to the tab head here: http://gist.github.com/633334 and fork the gist.

By the way, have you checked out theĀ Age of Adz track list? ;)

Hi Mike – thanks for sharing this! I haven’t heard this guy before, probably because I haven’t been paying much attention lately. Feel free to post more clips like this as you find them. Also, thanks for the other banjo tabs on your site – I have made some use of them! I didn’t get Sufjan’s new album yet, but I have heard one song (Vesuvius). What is your opinion of the rest of the album?

Honestly, I haven’t actually “listened” to the album. I’ve had playing in the background plenty of times but I haven’t delved deeper. However, the parts that I have payed attention to are intriguing.

From the snippets I’ve heard, this album is much more mature. It draws upon everything musically he’s done so far (BQE, Enjoy Your Rabbit, Seven Swans, Illinoise, etc) and explores the human experience. It really could be, as they say, his “magnum opus“.

I would highly recommend taking some time out to listen to it.

I have been playing banjo, on and off, for 4 years now. I love indie/alternative music and also loved to play it. When I first got my banjo there weren't any tabs out there for Sufjan or Iron and Wine, so I tried to figure them out. Thus, the birth of alternativebanjo.
